CSA Week 12; Labor Day - we got your farm veggies and more

Posted 8/29/2017 5:58pm by Jennifer LaMonaca.

CSA 12 pickup Wed 8/30, 1-6PM, and Sat 9/2, 9AM-2PM.

ON THE TABLE IN FARM SHOP… Greens – Kale, Arugula. Zucchini back (new field, just coming in). Also Radish, Onions, Leeks, Garlic, Potatoes, Carrots, Beets, Eggplant, Peppers, Tomatoes.  Summer’s treats – Cantaloupe/Watermelon; AND a taste of fall – spaghetti/buttercup.  Mix and Match options

Winter squash tips: spaghetti squash – why the spots? it is a soil borne issue. When it rains, it splashes onto the fruit causing disease. The spots are superficial, they do not affect flavor, just storage capability; eat sooner than later.  Extras for sale – preserve the harvest – cook and freeze. New to “winter squashes”? Cut in half, scoop out seeds, place face down in glass baking dish, bake 375 until fork tender, remove flesh from rind and use in a variety of recipes – pies, quick breads, mac and cheese, soups. I always have a container of squash puree in fridge/freeze ready for a meal in the fall.  Enjoy!

PICK YOUR OWN… fields will be wet - bring your mucking shoes.

  • Green Beans;
  • Flowers – plenty of sunnys and others;
  • Herbs – very nice Dill and Cilantro (near driveway, next to beans). Also a handful of Oregano/Thyme/Chives in 1 row near barn;
  • Tomatillos – let us know what you think – it’s our first year growing them;
  • Tomatoes – all good things must come to an end.

  • Fresh Baked Breads AND other artesian provisions - Hammerbacher, EHC;
  • Corn AND Peaches – end of summer bbq's – Pastore Orchards, Hammonton (looking forward to apples next week!);
  • Cheeses (Mozzarella, Feta, Gouda, Ricotta)– Fulper Farms, Lambertville;
  • Chicken Sausages – Griggstown Farms, Princeton.
  • Eggs – Cycle Farms;
  • Pasta (Spaghetti, Ravioli, Gnocchi) – Red Room Café, Ventnor;
  • Farm Veggies – available in Farm Shop AND at Galloway Farmers Market. Adding new vendors weekly - come check it out!

A Community Note… Our thoughts and prayers are with Texas and Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.  We send our love and support to our military and the police, fire fighters, medical personnel, volunteers and other responders who work together to relieve suffering and get help to those who need it. The human spirit is truly remarkable; we are one. Stay strong.

See you on the farm.
